The anime you mentioned was called Monster. Ergo Proxy is a dark anime with a lot of philosophy in it as well. Paranoia Agent is also short and one of the best animes I've ever seen. Uh, if you want a mash up of hip hop and feudal Japan with the best anime soundtrack ever, Samurai Champloo.

That list was in no particular order. Avatar isn't the greatest thing ever but it is to me because it was a bright spot in a difficult and stressful part of my life where I was tired of being a teenager and would rather stay at home and nerd out. It was obiously a kid's cartoon but it's special because it's so mature in every aspect, be it the writing or the animation. I can still marathon that shit and love it.

That sounds interesting, I'll have to check it out.

But really, Attack on Titan tho. Quality.
